Institutes in Action: Evidence-Based Public Health

Public health institutes (PHIs) are committed to an evidence-based approach to improve public health. One of the ways PHIs promote the use of evidence in public health programs is through using the Guide to Community Preventive Services to address the indicators of the County Health Rankings through partnership and technical assistance with local health departments, community groups, and other stakeholders.

Health Policy Institute of Ohio: Using the Community Guide Recommendations to Promote Physical Activity

The Health Policy Institute of Ohio (HPIO) focused on the Community Guide recommendation to Athens County, OH to "create or enhance access to places of physical activity combined with informational outreach activities."  HPIO worked with a broad range of state and local stakeholders to foster a local wellness collaborative to implement and sustain the recommendation throughout the county.  To learn more about the project, view HPIO's showcase.

Kansas Health Institute: Using the Community Guide Recommendations to Address the County Health Rankings

The Kansas Health Institute (KHI) selected and implemented various Community Guide recommendations—including enhanced access, social support, and individually adapted behavior change programs—to increase physical activity in Kansas counties with low physical activity indicators and high poverty rates.  Through its efforts, KHI strengthened state and local level partnerships, increased local health improvement capacity, and integrated evidence-based policy and practice into community health improvement activities.  To learn more about the project, view KHI's showcase.
