Highlights from NNPHI Annual Conference 2008
The National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI) held its 7th annual conference, Unlocking Hidden Potential for Health Policy Reform, on May 14th-16th, 2008 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Over 100 participants from the nation’s public health institutes, state health policy centers and national health promotion leaders attended. The conference highlighted the work of national organizations, public health institutes, health policy centers, and local health collaboratives related to health reform.

Several interactive discussions were featured this year, as well as networking and educational opportunities. Some of the memorable highlights include:
- A provocative keynote address by George Halvorson, Chairman and CEO of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals. George Halvorson is author of the recently released Health Care Reform Now! Copies of the book were provided to all participants.
- Leaders from state and local initiatives summarized their discussions on how to incorporate health promotion and prevention into health reform efforts in Stories from the Field: Local and State Forums on Health Transformation. Participants discussed with panelists how to move the dialogue forward, including articulating the most important areas of prevention, the roles of different sectors as well as the need for good indicators that are important to decision-makers.
- Participants heard from leaders of the Healthiest Nation Alliance and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Commission to Build a Healthier America as part of a National Initiatives panel. Discussion included how national initiatives must be both top down and grass roots as well as the need to engage other critical partners to get health promotion messages out.
- Vincent Lafronza with CommonHealth Action explored the upstream social determinants of health. Participants viewed a clip from the PBS documentary Unnatural Causes to help frame the discussion.
- Three cutting edge projects were explored in From the Frontline: Public Health Institutes Complementing the Public Health System. Leaders from three public health institutes shared stories of how their institute is playing a critical role in advancing technology and tackling complex public health issues through unique partnerships in their state. Participants engaged in small group discussions about these efforts through roundtable sessions.
- An engaging discussion was facilitated through the CDC Portfolio Managers Panel, which explored the federal public health investment in states and how the work of public health institutes and state health policy centers can complement and advance the goals of the CDC.
- Dr. Neal Halfon, founding and core member of the Blue Sky Initiative, concluded the 2008 NNPHI Annual Conference with a thought provoking discussion of the broader context for the problems facing the health system and challenged participants to engage in innovative collaboratives to address the complex issues ahead.
