Director, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control

JOB SUMMARY:
The Director is responsible for providing leadership in developing and executing a national program for non-occupational injury prevention and control with Federal, State and local agencies, voluntary and private sector organizations. The Director advances the state of science through research focused on development and evaluation of strategies to prevent and control injuries, including research in biomechanics, epidemiology and prevention, and the treatment and rehabilitation of the injured.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Basic Qualifications for AD-0601: Applicants must possess a degree with a major study in an academic field related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. In addition, a Ph.D. or other earned doctorate in one or more of the following: disease prevention or related health sciences, public health, epidemiology, social or behavioral science.
Basic Qualifications for AD-0602: Physicians must have a Doctorate of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accredited body in the year of the applicant's graduation and a current medical license to practice medicine and surgery in a State or Territory of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed pre medical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country. Applicants who have completed part or all of their education outside of the U.S. must have their foreign education evaluated by an accredited organization to ensure that the foreign education is comparable to education received in accredited educational institutions in the U.S. If the medical degree was received from a foreign medical school, but you are licensed to practice medicine in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States require no other certification in regard to the quality of their education.
Since this position has a specific education requirement, applicants must verify completion of this basic education requirement by submitting a copy of an official college transcript with the application. For AD-0602, you may submit a copy of your current medical license to verify completion of the basic education requirement. We will be unable to return these documents to you. In addition to the above education requirements, applicants must possess at least one year of professional specialized experience. Specialized experience is that which is directly related to the position and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, such as demonstrated experience in leading, directing the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of public health programs, policy formulation and implementation and scientific issues.
Each element must be addressed individually as an attachment to your application. This evidence must include clear, concise examples that show level of accomplishment and degree of responsibility.
1) High degree of public health prominence and expertise, and a distinguished record of accomplishments in the field of public health, such as in chronic disease prevention, environmental health, and injury and violence prevention and control; such that the individual can readily command the respect of the national and international public health communities and stimulate their interest in the CDC mission of protecting health and promoting quality of life;
2) Strong leadership experience in creating a vision and setting direction for large organizations, such as a scientific, public health, academic or non-governmental organization. Inherent is the ability to lead organizational change, leverage divergent positions or organizations in a manner which contributes to organizational effectiveness, and/or align or realign organizational resources for improved impact;
3) Experience in developing and implementing national, state, or local policies, programs and research related to the assessment and development of studies to better understand the leading causes of unintentional and violence related injuries or other leading causing of chronic disease or environmental health risks and interventions;
4) Experience which demonstrates the ability to direct and manage a complex public health organization, including establishing strategic plans and policies, developing and presenting budgets, evaluating program accomplishments, and building and maintaining a diverse staff;
5) Experience that indicates the ability to deal effectively with high-level government officials, the scientific and academic communities, national or international medical and health-related organizations, diverse community and non-governmental groups, and; the public at large;
6) Experience in mobilizing, collaborating and leading across and within organizational boundaries in order to promote research findings, program or policy implementation within the public health arena.
