The Network for Public Health Law and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation are inviting applications for five Visiting Attorney – Public Health Law Practice positions. This inspiring and challenging post-JD experience is designed to provide recipients with exceptional skills in practice-based public health law to advance their public health law careers. These are full-time, salaried, one-year appointments with benefits. The Institute on Social Exclusion (ISE) is one of the Institutes for Social Change at The Adler School.  The mission of the ISE is to build strategic alliances to ensure that all members of society have safe housing, quality education and healthcare, fair terms of employment, nutritious food, personal safety, and judicial equity.  The ISE is launching a new Center of Excellence on the Social Determinants of Mental Health with the aim of becoming a national center of excellence for the generation and dissemination of knowledge about the influence of social conditions on public mental health, particularly as it relates to disadvantaged and marginalized populations. 

The Director of the new Center of Excellence, reporting to the ISE Executive Director, will engage in action-oriented, community-informed scholarship that expands the frontiers of knowledge necessary to develop strategies  that eliminate mental health inequalities.  Working through mutually beneficial and respectful partnerships with communities, government entities, non-governmental organizations and the private sector, as well as trans-disciplinary teams that tap the knowledge, frameworks, approaches, methods, tools and languages of both professionals and the lay public, the Director will oversee efforts that:

  • Increase understanding of the wider determinants of mental health
  • Address mental health disparities and inequalities
  • Develop and promote the concept of “public mental health”
  • Build community capacity for addressing the social conditions that impact mental health
  • Bridge the gulf between public health (i.e., physical health) and mental health
  • Advance the integration of mental health considerations into legislative and public policy decision-making processes (eg. Health Impact Assessments)

Job Description: 
ACHI seeks a Chief Operational Officer (COO) who will ensure that the Director concentrates his time and effort on strategic activities vital to the sustainability of the organization. As an integral part of ACHI’s leadership team, the COO will assist in creating efficient and effective operational plans within three core business areas: disease prevention/health promotion, health care delivery, and finance systems. The COO will oversee smooth integration of new projects and participate in the oversight of existing projects to ensure that objectives and timelines are met. He/she will manage day-to-day activities by supporting the Director in the fulfillment of the mission and vision of ACHI, providing resource management leadership, building organizational capacity, and operating as a catalyst for cross-functional learning. The ideal candidate will handle complex situations and multiple responsibilities simultaneously, mixing long-term projects with the urgency of immediate demands. He/she must also have the demonstrated ability to deal with highly confidential information and act as a liaison between the Director and staff and other external constituencies in matters related to operations. He/she must exhibit the skills necessary to collaborate with and achieve actionable results through others, the ability to build strong and sustainable relationships, and the capability to interact within all levels of the organization. 
 
Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications are a Master's degree plus 5 years of management experience or Bachelor's degree plus 10 years of management experience. Salary is negotiable.
